How to live more courageously

Last week I had the privilege to chat to Tash Pieterse, Life and Mindset Coach for ambitious professionals and new leaders. Tash shared with us her tips on how to live more courageously. You can find the recording here and the access Passcode is #N=R1T*s

Tash’s seven steps into courageous action

1. Get clear on what you really want

Moving forward intentionally and courageously requires clarity on what you actually want, how you want to feel and where you want to go. It’s ALWAYS important that it aligns with YOU, not anyone else

2. Identify your deepest fear

Sit with your vision and then ask yourself, what am I most afraid of happening? What is the worst that can happen? Danger is real but the fear is an act of your imagination.

3. Be honest about the cost of inaction

Every choice you make has a cost, equally, every choice you don’t make, has a cost. What is it costing you every time you don’t take courageous action? Be honest. Research shows as humans we discount the cost of choices even when it’s obvious they aren’t us:

  • Not saying no

  • Unhealthy self-soothing

  • Not asking for what you need and want

  • Continuing energy-draining practices

The very act of acknowledging that something needs to change is an act of courage.

4. Break your vision and goals into small steps

Whatever it is you want to do, create, or change - break it down into small, easy to action, manageable steps.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, you only need to see the next step. You don’t have to have ALL of the skills, you only need to learn the next one

5. Have accountability

It can be SO easy to fall back into old patterns and old comforts. Have someone in your corner who won’t let you go back to playing small and not choosing YOU.

Choose someone who will call you forward (even when you may not like it), they will encourage you to be your best and live from your heart.

6. Walk with courageous people

The people you surround yourself have an influence on who you are and become. It is said that you are only as good as the company you keep.

If you want to live a courageous life, be with people who are in the arena with you. It’s important to distance from people who want to keep you small (may not intentionally) and who constantly live in the survivor (fear) mindset

7. Practice courage daily

The mantra of my coaching work - PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE.

We touched on the concept of 1% better, small consistent and continuous action delivers results. What is a tiny new courageous action you can begin tomorrow?

“The willingness to show up changes us. It makes us a little braver each time.”
